Walter met and fell in love with Taeko many moons ago in Tokyo. He spent his career serving the United States and they decided to retire in Star Tannery. Taeko had a passion for teaching Americans about the Japanese culture and yearned for a way to continue, having devoted quite a few years with the non-profit organization called the John Manjiro Society. They opened Pembroke Springs Retreat in 2001. In 2007 their Daughter Lisa joined them to re-open the renovated building; she came to the Virginia bed and breakfast with experience as a catering director and a degree in hospitality and tourism management. It remains a family affair, and today their Son Winston can also be found on the property, walking the now famous turkeys. Junior currently has no aspirations of being an innkeeper but loves Pembroke Springs Retreat!
